What do independent contractors charge?

Many people think that the rates contractors change are huge. ICA member Luke has put together a pie chart of what his charge rates constitute. It certainly makes for a different perspective from those general impressions.

I've been reading Ken Phillips' Business Spectator articles recently on the unions and combined with more than a few news articles about tax entitlements and class warfare and it hasn't been painting a very good picture on the state of the Australian society. There seems to be a very large number of people who think taking from the profitable side of society to give to the needy (pick a group---union workers, the sick, the poor, the elderly, the unemployed, the employed but earning less than the average wage, those with kids ...) is a mandatory entitlement to being a member of society. I.e., if you are profitable then you must pay an ever-increasing slice of this prosperity to society for this privilege of being profitable.

One of the recurrent themes popping up was that it was un-Australian not to support this and if you didn't like it then go somewhere else---that's the price for a peaceful society. Well, by the looks of it, this advice is being taken and people and businesses are moving overseas. Or they are closing up shop (Ford, Qantas, Holden, Hasties, BHP, Pac Brands to name a few). Perhaps we should be looking at how prosperity can be shared through co-operation rather than trying to take it forcibly from those who have it.
