Let’s stamp out reverse factoring—It’s big business at its worst

Thursday, November 28, 2019

I’m in Parliament House Canberra.

We’ve talked about this before… reverse factoring.

Let’s stamp it out.

Here’s our quick YouTube post from Parliament calling for action:  More...

Explosive, gobsmacking statements by Tax Commissioner raise serious concerns about democracy, the rule of law and cover-up

Friday, October 25, 2019

Perhaps we thought we’d seen just about every ‘trick’ by the ATO, but the statements by the Tax Commissioner to the Senate on Wednesday (23 October) go to an entirely new level. The ATO ‘battle bar’ has just been raised, big time!

What has motivated the Commissioner is the ‘Right to Know’ public campaign being conducted by a large coalition of Australian media interests against the government’s suppression of free speech. This week ‘Right to Know’ released its first television/on-line advert. The opening ‘punch’ in the advert asserts that the ATO can take money directly out of people’s accounts “but you’re not allowed to know…”  More...

‘Houston we have a problem’—says ATO—at long last!

Sunday, September 08, 2019

In 1970, when the Apollo 13 space mission suffered a major malfunction, the astronauts immediately declared to mission headquarters in Houston, Texas: ‘Houston we’ve had a problem’. Here’s a clip from the 1995 Tom Hanks’ movie on Apollo 13 in which he makes the declaration.

Recognising and admitting to a problem is the first, most critical step to fixing it.

Just a week ago Tax Commissioner Chris Jordan finally declared ‘we have a problem’. But, wow, has that declaration been a long time coming! More...

We ask MPs: ‘Stop this ATO bully boy tax Bill’

Wednesday, July 24, 2019

We rushed into action late Saturday night when we discovered that a really scary tax Bill was listed for a vote in Parliament this week.

The new law is supposed to stop illegal phoenixing. (That’s when someone sends their business bankrupt then ‘rebirths’ it under another name. They leave victims with huge debts.) But this new law would instead empower the ATO to: More...

Our role in the election campaign. Independence and aspiration

Thursday, May 23, 2019

Last Saturday’s (18 May) surprise election outcome has triggered a tsunami of commentary about what went wrong for Shorten’s Labor and what went right for Morrison’s Coalition. The consensus opinion is that:  More...

Labor to reintroduce independent truckies destruction law. We oppose

Tuesday, May 14, 2019

We’re really worried about one aspect of a Shorten Labor government.

Bill Shorten plans to bring back trucking laws that will destroy the businesses of around 50,000 independent truck drivers across Australia. If they can attack the legitimate small businesses of one group of self-employed people, we have to ask, where will Labor stop?

Our use of the words ‘destroy businesses’ is not extreme. Under the now-repealed Road Safety Remuneration Tribunal (RSRT), independent truck drivers’ businesses were wiped out. Several confirmed suicides occurred.  More...

Morrison and Shorten both committed to ATO reform on small business treatment

Monday, May 13, 2019

You’ll be aware that our biggest campaigning push over the last two years has been for major reform to the ATO. Here’s the history of our battle.

We’ve congratulated both the Morrison Coalition and Shorten’s Labor for recognising that there are big problems with the ATO’s mistreatment of small business people. The evidence is overwhelming.

What’s been important is that both Morrison and Shorten have responded. More...

Comparing Shorten’s taxes on small business people with Morrison’s

Thursday, May 09, 2019

Our tax calculator released last week shows that if you earn more than $38,000 a year you will normally pay more tax under a Shorten Labor government than under a Morrison Coalition government. We can praise Bill Shorten for being totally honest that a government he leads will be a high-taxing government.

Today we compare Labor’s small business tax policies with those of the Coalition and discuss them. Overall, small business people will pay more tax under Labor than the Coalition. More...

Calculator: How much extra tax will you personally pay under Shorten compared with Morrison?

Thursday, May 02, 2019

Labor leader Bill Shorten has been totally honest that, under a government he leads, taxes will be higher than under a Morrison Coalition government. Praise is due for the honesty.

What is unclear, however, is who will pay the higher taxes and how much. That is, who of us will pay more tax under a Shorten Labor government and how much will we pay?

We’ve put together a calculator that gives a guiding answer to that question. It’s a pretty good guide we think. You can go to the calculator here.  More...
