Unions and Turnbull on the same page? Destroying worker freedoms!

Thursday, February 01, 2018

I'm afraid we're seeing a big political swing against freedom in the workplace. The most obvious driver of this agenda is the Australian Council of Trade Unions.

Essentially, what unions want are changes to the Fair Work Act to force businesses to do deals with unions. The FWA was created by the Rudd Labor government in 2009. But it has not worked to the advantage of the unions in the way unions had expected. The key to union/business deals is that unions offer businesses corrupt deals that either (a) reduce workers' wages and/or (b) make life more difficult for the businesses' competitors. Businesses pay money to unions for this 'service'. More...

It’s the gig economy, stupid!!

Friday, January 19, 2018

Technology is crushing traditional jobs. The command-and-control factory is being replaced by robots. Banks are rapidly removing pen-pusher jobs by the tens of thousands!!! For those with an economic bent, the Milton Friedman-type assumptions about how an economy operates are dead!

What’s taking over is the ‘gig’ economy. But what is it?  It’s pretty simple really.  More...

The state as an enemy of freedom. Lessons from Lisbon for us all!

Sunday, January 07, 2018

In the historic sector of Lisbon, Portugal, nestled quietly next to the imposing 13th Century Lisbon Cathedral is a nondescript block of a building. It houses the Museum of Aljube – Resistance and Freedom. For the naive tourist who wanders in from the intriguing, cobbled alleyways of Lisbon and not familiar with the more recent history of Portugal, the museum is a moving shake-up. The museum records the struggle against the dictatorship that governed Portugal from 1926 to 1974. This is recent history! The museum building itself housed the dictatorship’s secret police. As you move through rooms you find yourself standing in torture cells, places where murder was committed by the state in the name of the state.  More...

The headache of the employee Xmas party while we self-employed rage!!

Tuesday, December 19, 2017

Yes, we have to feel sorry these days for employees who are forced to attend the staff Xmas party. All the merriment has changed.

First, employees have to undergo HR training and briefings on how to behave or not behave. Hugs are banned. Be careful who you smile at and how! No sitting on Santa’s lap. Conversations and greetings must be religiously diversified and non-judgmental. Champagne is replaced with sparkling non-alcoholic lolly water. Sorry, no jokes! More...

The ATO thinks the earth is flat. That’s how dumb and dangerous it is!

Tuesday, November 21, 2017

I’m sure the ‘employment assessors’ at the ATO are members of the Flat Earth Society. Yes, a ‘flat-earthers’ group actually exists. It was formed in 1956. Its members are not comedians but serious. Here’s their logo and website. Go figure!

The ATO flat-earthers are the high priest enforcers of the ATO’s flat earth bible: its ‘employee-contractor decision tool’. Have a look at its ‘terrible friendly’ video saying how the ATO will help you. But everything on the video and in the decision tool is wrong at law and promotes a dangerous ATO-manufactured myth. In fact, the very decision-tool itself is an instrument of illegality. And it’s not there to help you but oppress you! More...

Lies and blatant misrepresentation really get up our nose! Like the ATO!

Monday, October 23, 2017

Perhaps only hermits may not have noticed the explosive allegations of sexual assault by dozens of women in Hollywood against the film mogul Harvey Weinstein.

The allegations are about a sexual creep making full use of the ‘casting couch’ along with fearful women being silenced by the Hollywood system. More...

We don’t usually praise a bank. But—well done NAB!

Sunday, October 15, 2017

First we said that NAB had ‘trashed its own small business brand’. We said this in March this year because of NAB’s lie that it had made its small business finance contracts comply with the unfair contract laws.

Last week we expressed tentative praise for NAB after it had ditched its bad contracts and come up with new ones. NAB’s self-congratulatory PR seemed to indicate a major step forward. But we said we’d check its standard form contract first.  More...

As small business, self-employed people, let’s be alert to our mental health

Tuesday, October 10, 2017

It’s World Mental Health Day. As small businessperson we’re often asked to have concern for the mental health of our employees (if we have any)! But what about our own mental health?

Mental health problems can happen to anyone. Here’s the story of high-profile media personality Osher Gunsberg, host of The Bachelor. He was out jogging and started hallucinating that the world was ending. He sought help.  More...

Bank lawyer: “We’ll do what we’re made to do”. Now they’re doing it!

Sunday, October 08, 2017

More good news on the unfair contract front! But first some background.

Back around 2009, when we were talking to big businesses about having fair contracts, the chief legal counsel for one of the big banks said to us, “We’ll do what we’re made to do.” We realized then how difficult our campaign would be. But we succeeded. The new small business unfair contract laws we pushed for started at the end of 2016More...
