Western Australian breakfast on Construction Code

Friday, February 10, 2017

Yesterday we congratulated the Senate independents for moving the implementation date forward for the Federal Construction Code to this year. This will be a big help to small business construction subbies.

Today we noticed some commentary in The Australian that big builders will have difficulties negotiating new compliant agreements with the building union, the CFMEU. We think that’s rubbish. We’ve seen before how quickly these agreements are changed when winning or losing business is on the line!!!

That’s why we’re having an information breakfast on the WA Construction Code. We’re recommending the WA Code should go national. And we don’t think many builders in WA have yet fully understood what the WA Code means for them. There are additional small business fairness compliance requirements where construction firms must:
  • Pay subcontractors on time;
  • Comply with small business unfair contract laws;
and where the WA Small Business Commissioner can investigate and mediate on disputes and refer unresolved issues to the code compliance unit.

Mike Nahan MP, Member for Riverton, is speaking. As WA Treasurer, he drove the WA Construction Code reforms.
